Special Services :: June 2012

By Anne Murphy, Special Services Chairperson

Luckily, we still have money in our budget but are awaiting the hot weather this summer. Again priorities go to people who have basic survival needs such as rent, utility bill requests and visual requests to help with glasses or contact lenses to help them see better. The committee will consider other applicants but will determine if they truly meet the needs of the Special Services Grant. We are stringently looking at all applicants and their needs since our grant was depleted this year. We are asking that are budget be increased back to $15,000 for fiscal year 2013.

For special services applications and guidelines go to moblind.org or call the MCB office at 314-832-7172 or Toll-free (800) 342-5632.

Special Services Committee :: March 2012

By Anne Murphy, Chairperson

According to the Board who met in November, 2011 we did not get approved for the$4000 amount that had been moved at the convention to add to our budget. However, we did receive an extra $500 from Matt Radetic, from Wrolf, Perrin and Associates in Overland Park, Kansas, which added to our budget.

So far at this writing we have had a warmer winter and have not gotten as many utility bill requests. However, we are waiting for the turn to take place in February. The committee met in January with Denny Huff to go over priorities and applicants and how to further assist people.

First approvals will be given to people with basic survival needs such as rent, utility bill requests and visual requests to help with glasses or contact lenses to help them see better. The committee will consider other applicants but will determine if they truly meet the needs of the Special Services Grant. We are stringently looking at all applicants and their needs since our grant was depleted this year. We hope it will be increased back to at least $15,000 next fiscal year. Have a safer and warm winter. To contact me email me at jasmurphy@sbcglobal.net or call at (314) 434-4051

Special Services :: December 2011

By Anne Murphy, Chairperson

We began this fiscal year with$5000 less than last fiscal year meaning we have $10,000. A motion was made at the convention to increase the budget by $4000 and this will be taken up at the board meeting in November. I have personally asked for money from corporations and am awaiting a response from them. So far we have used $3,253.40.

This has been used by ten people. Six people were assisted with utility bills, three with rent payments and one appliance replacement.

The committee also revised the application and guidelines for this program to make it easier for the applicant to provide the necessary information and to hopefully make the process go faster.

Thanks goes to our professional President, Denny Huff, for appointing me to this position. Due to my long work history as a social worker and my Master of Social Work Degree as well as my LCSW I am confident this is a perfect fit for me. I love to assess individual’s needs and have a lot of experience doing so. I am glad to help “my own “sort of speak meaning the visually impaired. I am rest assured that there is actual money to give to those individuals who are in need of it. I had been in the past burnt out in my work positions navigating the bureaucracies to get the assistance people need.

My committee members Linda Hager, from Progressive, and Robert Jako, from united workers have worked in coordination with me to make decisions quickly and to get the funds people are eligible for out in a quick manner. Special thanks goes to Virginia and Eleanor from the MCB office who get me what I need, when I need it and work hard with me to get individual’s the resources and assistance they need.

We were given $15,000 this fiscal year and used all of it except $64.08 which ran out in early May.

I am eager to start the new fiscal year and to make any improvements in getting services as well as financial assistance to individuals.

Thanks again. More next time. Anne

Special Services :: June 2009

I'm so sorry to say that at this time Special Services has NO MONEY remaining in its budget.  In fact Special Services is in the RED to the tune of ($1,031.09.)  We will not have any money until the Board approved the new budget for 2009-2010 year at the Convention in October.

This is a terrible way for our committee to start off but we had no choice.  The applications that we currently have now will be the first ones we will work on after the new budget is approved.

Thank you for your understanding.

God Bless You All
